Artistic Statement
My work is based on the representation of the figure and pays particular attention to the spaces that surround people. I am interested in depicting relationships, as well as aloneness or solitude, and aim to capture the changing dynamics in a relationship when one person is added or taken away.
I try to observe the energy or aura that surrounds a person, and how that can alter, with or without company. My work also attempts to present a visual interpretation of how personal history may be apparent or absent. Paintings and drawings are mainly informed by watching the people around me, be they friends, family or strangers. I also draw on images from history, theatre and early film stills.
In addition to this, I am currently developing a body of work based on the notions of belief and superstition, and their impact on everyday life. I am interested in how the supernatural is presented to us – often via the dual notions of mystery and deception. I am also interested in exploring the idea that ‘energy’ can survive through time, and that many people believe we share our world with unknown phenomena.
I work in a variety of media and place a strong emphasis on drawing techniques. I graduated from Edinburgh College of Art and University in 1997, with an MA (Hons) in Fine Art, and have since exhibited throughout the UK, and have work in private collections in Europe and the USA.
